What's a codec?

The portmanteau of coder-decoder.

The term “codec” has been the way to refer to the main component of a traditional hardware-based video conferencing solution that performs the audio, video and content mixing of a traditional video conferencing system. It is, in essence, the heart of a telepresence system where a video camera, microphones and content (typically from your laptop or a wireless device) is encoded to your participants on the “far-end” and, in turn, their participation is decoded to your displays and speakers in your conference room. But, those codecs are expensive and come with infrastructure requirements and ongoing fees that make it difficult to scale within most company’s budgets. But, if you already use laptops with USB C, chances are, you already have the power of a codec inside!

Cisco Roomkit Plus: Once USB C makes it it mainstream and technology champions develop the ultimate user experience directly on the video conferencing software client, codecs will be a thing of the past.

The Apple Macbook Pro with 2 USB C ports standard will pave the way for laptops to be all you need to leverage all of the technology in even the largest conference rooms.
Even the Microsoft Surface is now coming standard with USB C ports as standard and the ability to now access more than just an extended display or power from the port. Soon there will be access to Network, Bidirectional USB and Audio, Control, Video Camera and power through one USB C connection.

Your laptop is a codec!

You already have the power.

Since the advent of USB C and the performance that is built in to most new laptops, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be leveraging the investment and power that now comes standard. With the capabilities of USB C, you can finally have one cable connection to do it all! And for the price of a codec, you could afford new laptops for everyone!

One cable to the table.

No adaptors, no confusion, no clutter

Our solution brings all of the connectivity you’d expect in one USB C cable! One USB C cable carries all of the following data types at once so you only have to plug in one cable from the table!

  • Video (Up to 4K/UHD @ 60 Hz for devices supporting USB-C Alternate Mode)
  • USB (becoming your USB 2 or 3 host connection @ 120 Mbps)
  • Audio (Full bidirectional audio)
  • Power (up to 60W charging)

What about DSP for AEC?

Digital Signal Processing and Auto Echo Cancellation

One of the most expensive features of a conference room is the implementation of Auto Echo Cancellation or AEC. With pricey hardware codecs, AEC is already defined by the hardware inputs and outputs so the processing to cancel echo is automatic. But, if you need to exceed the number of microphone inputs on the codec, it requires an external processor (like the ones pictured) and a lot of complexity, set-up, programming, installation and of course more expense.

But why, especially in this day and age, is all of this complexity still necessary? It’s not.

We’ve partnered with the most innovative manufacturers to solve these problems. No Codec and no DSP required.

How do we tackle AEC?

Danté and AVB of course!

We use a Specialized Dante® or AVB appliance on its own audio network to handle AEC automagically. No complicated third-party control processor to program, no expert audio engineer to tune the room. No ongoing support calls or ongoing problems to fix. Need more coverage? Add another mic/speaker pod via standard network cable, auto-retune via it’s web page and done.

Conference room audio just got simple - and scalable.

Audio quality starts with your room acoustics.

Expensive DSP alone won't make your room as good as it could be.

Here we are in the world of video conferencing - a presentation opportunity of epic proportions! You meet new business prospects and are given the opportunity to he seen and, more importantly , heard. As George Lucas said… "Sound is 50 percent of the motion picture experience", and the same is true for your meetings. We reccomend and install RealTraps® acoustical panels to tame any room.  RealTraps® will make your voice sound great to your meeting participants on the far-end and you'll be remembered for what you said not for what they couldn't hear.
